As has long been planned, following a successful debut season as First Team Manager, Joe Waller is leaving the club to play Vets football next season. Kane Pelgrom and Si Warren will be taking up the reigns as joint First Team Managers.

Reluctantly, the Committee have decided to continue with only one team next season, folding the Reserves. The primary reason is a lack of time for all concerned to continue attracting new players to the club.

The Reserves side played for just over a decade, and will forever be a part of UCC.

Joe Waller will take over from Chris Flindall as First Team Manager.

Covid-19 saw a premature end to the football season, with no play possible from mid-March onwards. This is particularly disappointing for the First Team, who were in the midst of a good season and pushing for promotion. The League Committee will prepare a draft constitution for next season, based on performances up to March.

A fantastic day saw the club mark the completion of another successful season, with players, managers and committee coming together to celebrate all things football and all things UCC.

The day started with a very well attended AGM, which saw the Committee for 2019/20 elected as below, the Chairman and Secretary provide updates regarding the club and league, and the two managers give their thoughts looking back on 2018/19 and their aims and plans for 2019/20.

In the afternoon, the now-traditional five-a-side tournament took place at Sandon School, with a record 30 players gracing the 3g. A group format saw the team of Chris Flindall, Gary Grant, Ian McMillan, Joe Waller, Martin Jones and Rob Bosworth top the table – Gary Grant repeating his win from twelve months previous, while Chris and Ian atoned for last season’s bottom placed finish.

A swift change, and it was back to the Globe pub for the main event, the Awards Night! An excellent evening saw well-deserved recognition for all the winners, along with record takings at the bar. Details of all of this years winners can be found on the Honours page.

A great day, celebrating a club which is looking forward with enthusiasm and optimism.

22 December 2017

At this time of year, and being a Christian club, it is worth reminding ourselves what the true meaning of Christmas is. To do so, Martin Jones has kindly put the following together….

What’s important?

At UCC it’s football that brings us together. We enjoy it and take it seriously. Bill Shankly, the 60s Liverpool Manager, famously said: “Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it’s much more serious than that.”

When we play football, we commit and we give our all. At least, we should – sometimes, it doesn’t work out that way! But when we play, it’s the most important thing in our world.

But we also know as we look at life that there are issues that are actually more important. We were all shocked and saddened at the sudden loss of Dawn from the Compasses. I know of others that are unexpectedly coping with loss of loved ones close to Christmas. It kind of puts things in perspective.

It reminds us that we need to keep our relationships positive. We need to be showing love and respect to those close to us. We need to build bridges sometimes maybe to repair relationships.

When we are reminded of the Christmas message, that of Peace and Goodwill to all men, it’s easy to dismiss it as something glib and sentimental, and maybe dismiss it as failure because in so many parts of the world, peace is conspicuous by its absence.

But Jesus didn’t come to bring global peace. He came to bring about peace by changing people, and as people come to know Him and know more about His words and teaching, they slowly change and embrace peace and love in a greater way.

Christmas isn’t about being nice for a few days but recognising that Jesus came to teach us a better way to live, a way of life which encourages love and harmony. It’s about changing the world one person at a time. And it’s about reflecting peace and love all year round, not just in the bleak midwinter.

Jesus was named Immanuel, which means “God with us!” He also said “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by me.” He wants to make a difference – he wants us to be different, to stand out in our attitudes and behaviour, and for us to bring something positive into our world.

Can we, dare we bring this into our football? So that teams know when they play us that they are in a contest, that we are competing and giving our all, but at the same time we are playing hard and fair, treating our opponents – players and officials alike – with respect? Can we win games and still leave the opposition with a sense of peace and goodwill.

It’s possible. It’s important – to allow that message of Christmas to permeate what we do, and maybe recognise the importance of allowing Jesus to change us for the better. Not just in football but in the really important areas of our lives too – our relationshipsx
